A simple introduction about Trackbacks
Trackbacks are very difficult to explain in words. Many professional bloggers are using this as an exercise to judge their skills. TrackBacks automate the interlinking of blog posts, but often don’t contribute to search engine ranking.
Trackbacks is like a comment; you will write a post, audience will read it and they will post comments accordingly. But what if that audience has a blog and want to comment by writing something in his/her blog about your post just like a normal comment? That’s where trackbacks will come in. It’s just like “Hey you gotta check this out, it’s awesome, here’s the link to it.” and he/she link to that particular post on your blog and he/she click publish.
Unknown to most specially new bloggers, your blog platform will scan all the links in a post each time a post is published. It will find the link your audience published and then it will go to your blog and checks you platform if your blog is accepting trackbacks. If so, then your audience’s blog will give a ping out to your blog and as if to say, “Hey, someone is talking about you in their blog!” and then your blog will answer the ping like “Sure! I’ll make a note on it!” And then your blog makes a little note on that particular post and say, “There’s also someone talking about this post in their blog and here’s the link to it.”
So your readers can see not just what the commentors are saying about it on your blog but what other bloggers are saying about it too. I don’t know to other blog platform, but WordPress are lumping the comments and trackbacks that’s the reason why you will not hardly notice that they are different.
You don’t have to know trackbacks in order to use them, you just need to enable them and it will work just fine. One of the best parts about trackbacks is that it helped to increase your blog’s linking probability and search engine ranking. With the introduction of the no follow attribute, links in comments and trackbacks are usually not included in the calculation of your blog’s Google PageRank. I think this applies to the other search engines as well. Still, the findability may not be in the search ranking but links from other blogs is always a good thing.
To enable trackbacks you can go to Settings > Discussion and find the Attempt to notify any blogs linked to from the article (slows down posting.), Allow link notifications from other blogs (pingbacks and trackbacks.), and Allow people to post comments on the article and enable them by clicking the checkboxes. Trackbacks are enabled in default.
