SEO Explained
Since the start of internet, millions of people accessed it until it grew bigger and larger than the human race and the fact that it’s already a necessity in this modern times, I am always surprised by how many people have no idea what SEO is about. They instinctively know why they like to click on that first listing in the results; but they don’t have the first clue how it got there. Making matters worse is the fact that the internet world is largely unregulated and still being figured out, so it seems that everyone has their own best practice and definitions of things like SEO. It is also a step of advertising your website by the use of search engines’ search results.
People intuitively clicking the first and top results is because they know it’s the best result for the phrase they typed in. However most people don’t know why one site would be better than another.
SEO is the process of configuring a website so that it has a chance to show up in a search result for a particular phrase. In other words, it’s the way of telling that your site is of that topic. Many of the search engines have a slightly different formula for how they determine these results. But the short version is that they look at different factors of each website page, rank them and then give those results to you.
Now, I will give you a simple advice on how you can maximize the potential of your website by doing some Search Engine Optimization work.
- Good site structures
A good site structure can give you a lot of good things for your website. If your visitors can’t navigate your website much likely search engines can’t too. The very first thing to remember is to make sure your links aren’t broken. You can also make a sitemap of your website and make sure all of the pages of your site is connected in that said sitemap. - Good meta data
Many of the site owners didn’t know this thing but you can say that many still understand this term. Meta data is inside the <head> tag of your page, included are the title, description, and keywords. Each page on your website should have a unique title and description that summarizes what that page is about and keywords will be a word, or a phrase that will tell what your website is.
One of the problems in this method is spamming. Putting title or description that didn’t match accurately is spamming the search engines. Doing this will get your page thrown out of the index and ruin any chance of showing up for a key phrase. Most people using search engines want to have the most accurate and relevant content that will be shown in the search results. By relevant and accurate, I mean that the content is specific to the topic in question and recently updated. In this modern times, one of the most updated site in the web are blogs and the non-blog website’s content are old and stale. - Link building
This is perhaps the least understood part of SEO. Search engines consider a link from another website to your website as a popularity vote. Think of it as power rankings for websites and the links from another site to yours is better because this will tell the search engines that your site have a content relevant to this kind of topic.
But be also warned that many people is using link building just to house links and your site could be added in this kind of business. This is called link farming and it can damage your site’s reputation.
So there you have it. You just need not to get off track building your site’s ranking and reputation.
